Deepfake Facebook

We have a new and scary adversary in the battle for truth and it’s called “deepfake” video. A “deepfake” is a technique for human image synthesis based on artificial intelligence. It is used to combine and superimpose existing images and videos onto source images or videos using a machine learning technique known as generative adversarial network.[2]The phrase “deepfake” was coined in 2017.

About a month ago, a video “deepfake” video of Nancy Pelosi popped up that seemed to show the House speaker slurring and stammering during a news conference. Naturally, it made it’s way around social media and Facebook refused to remove the video saying that third-party fact-checkers had deemed the video “false,” but that the company would not delete it, adding, “We don’t have a policy that stipulates that the information you post on Facebook must be true.”

Well, now, Facebook has a sticky situation on their hands as a “deepfake” video of Mark Zuckerberg has been created and is making its rounds on social media. Created by Israeli startup called Canny AI as part of a art installation intended to show how technology can be used to manipulate data.

We talk about the “deepfake” video; the impact it has on social media, the role of and response by social media platforms, and how they could transform the platforms as we know it.

Nope. Turns out he was part of a brilliant marketing campaign for Austin’s Cuvée Coffee, created by Cuvée owner Mike McKim in collaboration with Bandolier Media.

We talk about Chris came to follow this guy, the way he “fooled” the public and grew his followers, and what impact this marketing campaign had on him and Cuvee Coffee.

Mozilla Be Blockin' (Google Analytics)

Mozilla Firefox recently released an updated version of their web browser which blocks all trackers including Google Analytics. Mozilla claims it’s making this change in order to keep users’ data private.

(UPDATE: shortly after this release and announcement, a Firefox developer stated that most of Google Analytics’ data will be unaffected)

We talk about how Google Analytics works, non-personally identifiable data vs. aggregated anonymous data, and how this could impact current digital marketing tactics.
