Instagram is considering removing Like counts

Instagram may be considering shaking things up on its social media site so posts no longer show exactly how many people have liked your post. Instead, you would see that a post was liked by a few named handles “and others” (Fast Company).

According to some reports and some beta test screenshots, Instagram includes the following in-app message explaining the change:

We want your followers to focus on what you share, not how many likes your posts get…During this test, only the person who shared a post will see the total number of likes it gets.” The message is seemingly targeted at influencers or would-be Influencers.

We talk about this move along with the evolution of social platforms related to speech and, by extension, how it transforms Marketing on social media.

Do YOU like this move? Does it change your strategy or view of Instagram?

QR Codes - are they making a comeback?

QR Codes. The weird looking square graphic that everyone was pushing and you gave up on after five attempts to scan might be making a comeback. According to recent estimates from Juniper Research, the number of QR coupons redeemed via mobile devices will reach 5.3 billion by 2022. By contrast, coded coupons redeemed via mobile in 2017 approached about 1.3 billion (PIWorld). This is in big part thanks to iOS and Android building in QR Code readers into their camera apps.

We talk about the creative opportunities for QR Codes and how businesses can think about including them in their Marketing toolkit.

Have you EVER scanned a QR Code? Was it easy? What was the incentive that motivated you? Tell us in the comments!

Should you tie your Marketing to pop culture events?

May The Fourth is around the corner and that got us thinking about how businesses run Marketing campaigns around Star Wars. Game Thrones is a popular choice to create memes and Marketing. You also have the biggest movie ever in the history of movies, Avengers: Endgame, has led to many campaigns and memes. And then there’s Deadpool, a property that takes it upon themselves to promote the movie in super creative and unconventional ways:

We talk about if this is something your business should do and how a Editorial calendar can help you take these types of campaigns to the next level.

Do you like when businesses run these types of campaigns? Are you a business that jumps in on pop culture Marketing campaigns? Share in the comments!
